Hit & Run on Carmona

Many residents in the area know about the dangerous stretch of road between Pico and Saturn on Carmona, a pretty tree-lined block just west of Hauser. Vehicles often speed down this narrow, 2-way street. Some of the drivers are intoxicated and on many occasions, en route to or from the liquor store on the corner of Pico and Carmona. There have been near misses amongst humans and animals alike as well as some tragic deaths. One is the death of our beloved feline, Piyaa (a.k.a Pitti Cat, Honey Pie, Brad Pitt, Mitzah Pitti, and so on).

Piyaa was struck some time between 10pm and 11pm on Thursday August 14, 2009. He was loved by so many and will be dearly and greatly missed.
Always, please take caution when driving, especially down residential streets. If you have indoor/ outdoor cats, always be mindful that they may stray a bit further than you might think. Even the sharpest and most fit adult human or non-human animal can be caught off-guard by a speeding vehicle. The neighbors of Carmona have been trying to get speed bumps installed and we hope their efforts to implement this and other safety precautions come to fruition. Thank you to the neighbors who called to alert us of Piyaa's demise. Our joyous memories of him are plentiful and everlasting.

Getting Fresh with Fish

by M. Frank

I sometimes have this urge to cheat...with fried food! I passed by this fairly new restaurant, Island Fresh, many times and was always a bit curious, but had never crossed that line. What I had finally experienced was incredibly fresh, perfectly seasoned and lightly fried fish and seafood. I talked to the owner, Andrew, a very friendly and welcoming Jamaican guy, as he fixed me up a combo of oyster, catfish and shrimp. Even the side of greens was delicious.

7/18 PVCA Meeting Minutes

by M. Frank

The biggest news that came from the meeting on Saturday, was that VONS on Fairfax and Pico will be demolished in order to make way for a state-of-the-art Pavillions with deli/cafe, Starbucks and upper level parking. Supposedly it will be something along the lines of the West Hollywood Pavillions on Santa Monica Blvd. Permitting alone will take up to 10 months so who knows when this all could be completed, but this is very exciting news.

Crime is on the rise, including a rash of break-ins. One break-in consisted of the perpetrators climbing over a fence to get to the back door, through which they crow-barred their way in before pepper spraying the resident's large dogs. The pepper spray trick seems to becoming more and more common. A lot of these break-ins are occurring between the hours of 10am and 4pm (during the workday). Be alert and communicate with your neighbors. We're all in this together.

In these terrible economic times, everyone is looking for ways to make more money, including the city and utilities. Inspectors are reviewing trash separation practices and fining where households are not making the grade. Ticketing for parking in driveways while blocking even just mere inches of the sidewalk are on the rise as well.

A ManiPedicure for Under $20

The words jumped out from the KIM LY Nails banner:

Mani/ Pedi $17.99

For months, I've been doing my own nails, resulting in a professional-looking job, but with 2x the effort and no Us Weekly/ People/ Latina magazine perusal.

The Kim Ly wall o' varnish presented no familiar brands, but plenty of options. It was between two hot summer colors: a grown-up hot pink and a bright "red alert" red, by MonaLisa and Santee Plus, respectively. Having worn lacquer from little known brands as well as the well-marketed pricey ones, I can say that all polish chips with abuse. Top/base coat and maintenance are key. Nevertheless, Technician Jenny's manipedicures at Kim Ly last longer, in comparison to others.

Like a seasoned farrier, Jenny filed, trimmed, and smoothed like it was her job, which is more than I can say for some slicers and ticklers. She whipped out a Pedi-Paws-type tool for the rough spots and took a tiny paint brush dipped in remover to erase a little bit of the misplaced color.

Satellite Auto Body Shops on Residential Streets?

It appears that Pico auto body business is spilling into residential neighborhoods. The scene above (on Sierra Bonita Ave. between Saturn and Pico) is illegal in Southern California. Restricted or Preferential Parking for residents would abate if not eradicate this growing problem. Several streets such as Carmona, Curson, Stanley, and Ellsmere either have Preferential Parking in effect or are pending. Comments are welcome.

Beware: Strange Folk Abroad

On Monday 5/18, an unnamed caucasian male, about 5'9 - 5'10, curly dark hair, 25 - 35 years old, and heavily cologned, came to my door asking for the man of the house, Frank, by name. He said he was a "new neighbor" and with a 2-page document in hand, expressed the need for a fax machine. I said that Frank wasn't home and he pardoned himself and walked away.

I doubt this stranger is a "new neighbor" because we don't know him. He could have been casing our home and going through our mail. Pico Life, please be on alert.

"Keeping kids on horses...and off the street!"

I have been crazy about horses since gestation and kids since I was a kid, so when I learned about the Compton Jr. Posse Youth Equestrians, becoming involved with this unique 501 c(3) non-profit was imminent. This past Sunday I volunteered for the Posse at a horse show where the promising riders (ages 5 to 20 years old) competed and were consistently "in the ribbons."

The Posse's Annual Benefit Gala will be held at Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank on May 30, 2009 (http://www.comptonjrposse.org/events/annualfundraiser/auction-add-donor-form).
Led by Founder & Executive Director Mayisha Akbar, this year's goal is to develop the first inner city equestrian charter school and riding team. Please visit www.comptonjrposse.org to: learn more; donate $$$, expertise, English riding equipment and apparel, barn equipment, silent auction items; purchase event tickets; and/or to sponsor the event/ the Posse/ a horse/ a rider.

RECAP: Picfair Village Association General Meeting

by M. Frank

Claudia Bayard led the meeting and started things off by introducing Elizabeth Carlin, Field Deputy for Council Member Herb J. Wesson's district office. Liz filled us in on a fair amount of things and here are the highlights:

1. Motion to extend the number of terms possible for Police Chief. Our Chief has drastically reduced crime in the area and a large majority would like him to stay on.

2. DWP has already begun enforcing "Watering Restrictions." Watering (via hose, sprinklers and even car washing) is only allowed on Mondays and Thursdays before 9AM and after 4PM.

3. The City of Los Angeles passed a "Billboards Ordinance" to drastically increase the fines for billboard violations.

Claudia took the floor again and the meeting switched focus to "Preferential Parking" for the 1400 blocks of Carmona, Sierra Bonita, Curson, Ellsmere, Stanley and the stretch of Saturn spanning those blocks. An informal vote was taken where 100% of residents residing upon those blocks voted in favor of Preferential Parking, primarily to remove the auto body shops' cars from their streets, which are sometimes parked for days at a time. 65% of that vote were in favor of 2-hour parking from 9am-6pm and 35% were in favor of 1-hour parking from 9am-6pm.

The Slashing: Neighborhood Council Budgets To Be Cut

From the desk of Soledad S. Garcia, Department of Water & Power Committee President:

Dear Colleagues,

Although the DWP Committee's primary activities are directed at DWP ratepayers' issues, the indiscriminate slashing of Neighborhood Council funding must be addressed by all Council Boards, their stakeholders and ratepayer advocates. By reducing funding by 80%, the Budget and Finance Committee in effect will be closing down Neighborhood Council representation at City Hall.

The City Council Budget Committee has gone beyond the Mayor's recommendation of a 10% funding cut for the FY 2010. It would behoove us all to support the Mayor's proposal of $45,000 for each Neighborhood Council.

Every one is aware that the City has a $500 million budget deficit. Many have opinions on the reasons for the deficit, but the focus here should be on the appropriate reduction of $5,000 to neighborhood councils. Every Neighborhood Council has contributed to Community improvement where the City has not. Every Neighborhood Council has contributed to the education of the neighborhood on City-wide issues, security and emergency preparedness and representing the Community on matters of importance to the stakeholders.

As representatives of Neighborhood Councils, write, email and phone the Budget Committee--Chairman Bernard Parks, Wendy Greuel, Greig Smith, Bill Rosendahl, and Jose Huizar. Let your own Council member as well as the other members of the Council know of your budget reduction concern. And while you're at it, let the stakeholders know they can write too. Be sure to send a copy to the media.

Very Important: Go to the Budget/Finance Committee at 12 PM on Tuesday, May 12th at 1 p.m. and to the May 18th Special City Council meeting meeting. If you have time, stop by City Council at 10 AM any time before the final vote to support the ten percent reduction and briefly tell them what your Neighborhood Council has done to improve the Community.

Stand up for Neighborhood Councils,

Soledad S. Garcia
DWP Committee President

Q & A: Roman Raygoza Design Studio

Roman Raygoza is primed to revolutionize the design world with his unique upholstery creations, trimmings, and accessories. Upon walking into Roman Raygoza Design Studio on Fairfax, I was instantly convinced...that I loved what I saw. The studio is reminiscent of a posh yet unpretentious friend's home, except for the floor-to-ceiling custom made shelves, lined with Roman's beautiful pillows. I suppose an accent wall could be made of pillows. Your imagination will wander too and this is what Roman loves about working with his clients---the opportunity to go where no designer has gone before...

PLLA: Where are you from?
RR: I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. My grandmother, who made the most beautiful pieces of jewelry, inspired me to become a designer.

PLLA: Were you an apprentice?

RR: I began working at an early age in my family's furniture manufacturing company. I learned to make furniture before I went to school.

PLLA: What was your most challenging job to date?
RR: I custom made a 16' long sectional sofa for one of my clients in Long Beach. We brought it up through the 4th floor window with a crane because the stairs were so narrow.

PLLA: What trends or techniques have you started?
RR: I have created a new technique of making antique mirrors look more interesting by adding patterns to the mirror.

PLLA: What is the best fabric?

RR: Blended fabrics, like polyester/cotton and polyester/ linen.

PLLA: In addition to your showroom, where can we see your work next?

RR: Everybody can see it at The Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2009. This year I sponsored 4 different designers with furniture, wall upholstery, and accessories
.

PLLA: Where have we seen your work already?

RR: The Pasadena Showcase House of Design, designer trade catalog www.designertrade.net, and p. 18 of Lucky magazine's February issue.

Thank you, Roman, and a Happy Mother's Day to your grandmother.

ReWIND: Community Effort at Saturn Street Elementary

This past Saturday marked the first time that Saturn Street School participated in Big Sunday, "the largest regional community service event in America" [from the Big Sunday website]. About 50 volunteers were expected, yet over 100 pitched-in to give the school a makeover, which included intense cleaning, landscaping, and painting. The Pico Neighborhood Council sponsored a delicious lunch and at the end of the day Carmen from La Maison du Pain bakery brought by some yummy treats.

Saturn Street School still needs volunteers to help maintain the landscaping. If you like to play in the dirt, contact organizers Melissa Patrick at mhrpatrick@gmail.com or Rayna Saslove at rsaslove@earthlink.net.

Nyala isn't on the menu at Nyala Restaurant, and that's O.K.

A "nyala" is a small gazelle-like animal and it's also a critically acclaimed Ethiopian restaurant that's been around since 1988. If you're only into eating nyala, then NYALA isn't the restaurant for you. However, if you have other carnivorous tendencies, vegetarians and pescatarians are welcome too, then satisfaction you will find.
My party of four devoured the #14 meat combination entree with a couple vegetarian samplers. We scooped up tangy lentils and tender stewed lamb with the spongy "injera" bread, which must have been some inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's "lembas" bread.
Lord of the Rings fans will know what I'm talking about.

Well Worth the Field Trip: diptyque body oil

During these tight times just walking out of your door and getting into your car can bring about "spendxiety," especially if you're headed to Fred Segal Melrose/ RONROBINSON. Last weekend, there was a launch event at Ron's beauty boutique, APOTHIA, for diptyque paris' first body care line.
The brand's Managing Director Andrew Sedlock, whose mere presence diminishes "spendxiety," guided me through each little luxury: a hand balm, rich body butter and wash, and a body lotion. But it was the iris-scented (with cedar and vetiver) Huiles Precieuses Body Oil that put me over the edge. A friend helped me back over, as did the $78 price tag, which I tried to justify due to the fact that a little of this precious oil goes a long way.
Calmly and gratefully, I walked away with a generous sample. I've since found 4 additional justifications/ uses----hair, bath, cuticles, and fragrance----so now that $78 seems more like $20.

A Day of Community Service at Saturn St. Elementary

Pride in where you've come from has a significant impact on where you're going. As a Title 1 school, where 92% of the student body is disadvantaged, the children of Saturn Street Elementary School have greatly benefited from community involvement. Big Sunday, the Pico Neighborhood Council, and Friends of Saturn are organizing a day of beautification at Saturn Street on Saturday, May 2nd from 10AM to 2PM. Volunteers are needed for painting, weeding, planting, cleaning, and general maintenance. All ages may sign-up at www.bigsunday.org/project/218.

"The Cupcake Chicks" Premiere at Bloom Cafe

A 200-year old carrot cake recipe with a secret ingredient from great-great-great Grandma's kitchen and moist, pillowy soft red velvet "yumminosity" will be debuting this weekend at Bloom Cafe, courtesy of The Cupcake Chicks, ($1.50 each). Chef Angel, a PicoLifer, and classically trained gourmet pastry Chef Erin have perfected their mini-cupcakes, which I can personally attest to, and they're taking them to the streets. Contact the chicks at thecupcakechicks@gmail.com for special orders, more flavors, and to find out where they'll be popping-up next.

Eco Pico: Visionary Boutique's New Digs

Last Fall, while traipsing around Melrose and La Cienega, I stumbled upon the slightly hidden eco-emporium of beauty/ bath, apparel (gals, guys, maternity), jewelry, baby/ kids, pets, and homewares+, Visionary Boutique. Head Visionary, owner & designer Magda Rod has rolled out the "green carpet" on Pico Blvd. with a new retail space and design studio.
Magda is committed to a "people, planet, profit" business model, and stocks the shop with like-minded brands that have adopted organic, sustainable, and/or pay-it-forward practices, including fair trade and saving the rain forests: Lluvia (skin care from the Amazon), Linda Loudermilk, Prairie Underground, Kailia (chrome-free recycled leather shoes), California Rising, and Josie Maran Cosmetics.
Check out the e-commerce site, www.visionaryboutique.com, for upcoming Earth Day events showcasing Magda's new creation....an eco-pimped, vintage AirStream boutique-on-wheels. Specialists in Above-the-waist Fashions Set-up Shop

Neighborhood State Farm agent Scott Langley and fashion designer Perry White are upping the retail ante on Pico. Top Spot, a new showroom and boutique sells shirts, blouses, dresses, and denim from Perry's line and others, at wholesale prices ($15 to $20). Scott expects that the shopping habits born of this economy will transcend the "recovery" and he plans to have 10 retail locations by year's end. One possibility is a partnership with shoe boutique Charli, owned by Jeanene Conley. Meanwhile, back at headquarters, Top Spot's weekly inventory influx and helpful Showroom Sales Specialists are building a following of frugal fashionistas. Try saying that fast 5x!

A Pico Park: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area

The term SRA or State Recreation Area simply does not do Kenneth Hahn Park any justice. It took a year to venture out of Runyon Canyon and take a chance on a park that's only 5 minutes away from the neighborhood. Better late than never!

Kenneth Hahn is the "Gem of Baldwin Hills" and during this time of year, with blankets of wildflowers and colorfully dressed field-trippers, the title is spot on. There's something for everyone at KH:  fishing lakes, huge grassy picnic areas, 7+ miles of hiking trails, and 180 degree views of LA. Enjoy the 4,000 words worth of pictures, but it's better in person.

Dr. Tatt-on: Mi Vida Loca Tattoo Opens on Pico

On assignment at a new niche showroom, I discovered a recently opened tattoo shop down the hall, Mi Vida Loca. MVL is the most welcoming tatt establishment I have ever visited thanks to the friendly folks behind the counter. Shop owner and head artist Angel has 15 years experience doing all styles, however, his "soft spot" is for Aztec black/grey, portraits, and custom Japanese art. Angel is also the "OG" of LA Ink Spot Tattoo on Crenshaw Boulevard. Both shops offer body piercing as well, but I feel a tattoo coming on. Perhaps Mi Vida Loca will be the first to achieve the "holy trinity" of tattooing:  skill (check), customer service (check), and pain-free (TBD). PLLA Fashion Selects: Y. BYNU

If your stylish best friend and your (grand)mother were to share a closet, it would look like Y. Bynu. The boutique touting "reduce, reuse, resale," just opened today. Pictured above are a few of my favorite pieces:
1. Vintage Silver Knit Dress w/ Skinny Belt - Knubbly and just a tiny bit sheer, you might rock this one with a colorful satin bra and matching pumps. If you're photographed with a flash, you'll want the right undergarment to show through.
2. Graphic Trina Turk Cotton Halter Dress - Very "Mod," but so modern.
3. Khaki Prada Dress - Sexy, utilitarian "Real Housewives of Los Angeles," a 1950's version.
4. Leather Hobo - I love the shape of this bag and its "v-neck." It looks like a souvenir from South East Asia.
5. Table of Vintage Accessories - That black/white bag is made of pearlized leather paillettes---fun!
6. Patent Leather Via Spiga Slingbacks - The heels on these are amazing--chunky for stability yet a triangular shape creates a sleeker silhouette. A great match to #1.
7. Wool Sailor Pants - This truly vintage number is so chic. They are the "bottoms" equivalent of a timeless pea coat.
8. Silk-print Diane Von Furstenberg Blouse - Baubles and flowers with a tie-neck---whimsical and classic!
9 - 11. Your neighborhood "resale, vintage, and new" boutique---Y. Bynu!

OPENING SOON: Pico's Resale and Vintage Boutique is the answer to, "Why buy new?"

Janel Glover of Y. Bynu, Pico's newest boutique, will soon open for business on Wednesday, March 11th. During a quick visit, I spied some gorgeous frocks and pumps from the likes of Prada, Ted Baker London, BCBG MaxAzria, A.B.S. and Trina Turk. Price tags of $10 to $45, and Janel's choice of soothing lavender hued walls and vintage-y decor gave me that "please-come-again" feeling. I will.

More to come on opening day...

Hi-Fashion is like a drug

Can you really pass up a shopping experience that produces giddy laughter, dilated pupils, prancing in the aisles, and bags full of stylish finds, all for under $50? At Hi- Fashion Clothing the PROS are the side effects and the CONS come with the territory of a low-risk fashion fix. To put it plain...
PROS: 1) Cute and trendy clothes, plus staples like tees (and scrubs), start at $2.99; 2) Brand recognition---Arden B., Forever 21, Urban Outfitters; 3) Well-merchandised and abundant stock; 4) Exchanges within 3 days of purchase (with tags and receipt); 5) Enrique Iglesias in concert on the flat screens.
CONS: 1) No trying on apparel at the store; 2) No refunds; 3) No guy stuff, except for some unisex large tees and the "Moc Croc" shoes.

Ladies' Night at The Comedy Union, presenting...

Mom and I love live entertainment, so during her visit we went to Ladies' Night at The Comedy Union on Pico Blvd., an LA landmark. The line-up for Thursday on the website read, "Nature of a Woman," and we were surprised to encounter not comedians, per se, but a play by author, playwright and screenwriter Sylvester L. Stephens (http://www.sylvesterlstephens.net/).

"EROTIC! DRAMATIC! COMEDIC! Ladies will love this and men will love it because their ladies love it! A dramedy series similar to a play, with lots of comedy. Based on the best-selling novel "The Office Girls" and its sequel “The Nature of a Woman!"" - The Comedy Union
Stephens' "The Office Girls" is brought to life by a funny and talented group of actors, all women and one man, who portray co-workers. All matters of office and relationship drama play out in prose as well as poetry in several hilarious acts. The play will run for 8 consecutive weeks (having started on 2/26/09), and the plot progresses with each week. Stephens' book "The Nature of a Woman" will be released on March 10, 2009 by Simon & Schuster. I can conclude that from what we've seen the book is going to be a fun read.

MISSING: Jack Russell Terrier (Sierra Bonita/ Saturn)

As of today, Feb. 23rd, our neighbors Greg and Chett are missing their cute Jack Russell Terrier, Tito. Tito is white with smooth hair and a large brown patch on his back. Very energetic. Cat-lover. There is a reward. Please call 323-791-1755 or 323-893-4237 if you have any leads and please look out for Tito on your walks.

UPDATE: New home for shaggy dog

The shaggy dog who was found wandering Saturn St. near Sierra Bonita has a "forever home!" Some good neighbors (GN's) just a block away had promised her neglectful owners that they would find a loving home for Bella the dog.
The neglectful owners, having allowed Bella to accumulate uncomfortable mats in her fur and fleas, simply couldn't wait a day or two for the GN's to find her permanent placement. So, they dumped Bella at the local VONS parking lot, where she wandered east, and was saved by a few dog-lovers on Tuesday morning.
Now, Bella has been reunited with her saviors, sporting a newly shorn-look and a super-bright future. Good luck, Bella and thanks to everyone who helped her along the way (you know who you are)!
[Pics to come!]

Janet the Jeweler and 'Holes for the Homeless'

My mom, a gorgeous 61 years young, would say of my [ear] piercings...

MA: Girl, you don't need another hole in your head!
ME [insolent teenage tone]: Well, ma, what if the holes helped the homeless of LA? What about that?!

Ma touches her ear.

Jeweler, Janet Rothstein of J. Rothstein & Co. of Beverly Hills, began an ear piercing promotion, in honor of Valentine's Day, for the homeless. A percentage of the $20 ear piercings will directly benefit the homeless men, women, and children who Janet meets everyday in downtown-LA's Jewelry District. J. Rothstein is also offering 10% off piercings and jewelry if you bring in donations of food and clothing.

Ma, when you come to visit, we'll get your second hole and lend a helping ear!

[WARNING: Do not send your old, gold jewelry in any of those crazy mailers. I wanted to re-purpose some jewelry, so I Google-searched reputable jewelers in the Pico-Hauser area. My search ended in J. Rothstein, the closest and I think best jeweler near our 'hood. Janet will re-work your jewelry into something fabulous and if you have 'old, gold jewelry,' it can pay for the labor and craftsmanship, depending on what you have done. Last I checked, the price of gold was $943.80!]

FOUND: Shaggy girl-dog

On Tuesday morning a good neighbor found an adorable, shaggy, medium-sized female dog (Tibetan Terrier?) with a twisted red collar, no ID, no micro-chip (we checked), and no human companion wandering around Saturn and Sierra Bonita (south of Pico and just east of Curson). She's very sweet, but covered in mats which can't be too comfortable for her. If this is your dog, please email me at ntahanid@gmail.com and I can refer you to an affordable groomer: Tom's Pet Grooming & Supplies on Washington Blvd. (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=tom). Thanks!

charli: PICO LIFE LA HOLIDAY FAVORITES

A sexy heel is the most important part of a holiday or New Year's Eve party outfit---if you wear heels. Jeanene Conley's new shoe boutique, charli, is committed to cute and stylish kicks without the Manolo or Gucci price tags. How about $30 to $45 for the holiday collection? She carries women's footwear labels such as Michael Antonio and Anna Michelle that feature comfortable (for a stiletto) and well-made (rubberized soles) styles.

Count to X-mas (a.k.a. spending-more-money-than-you-normally-would)

Pico Life-ers, I know. It has been way too long. My joy after the biggest win in history (as far as I'm concerned), work craziness, and the start of the holidays had rendered PICO LIFE LA, silent, yet ever watchful.

What was BOIS is now the new CHARLI, a shoe and accessories boutique just across from Bloom CAFE. What was Little Owl Cafe is now CHIC, a delicious rotisserie chicken restaurant by the owners of Bloom----simple, clean, and the best mushroom sauce a gal could ever want. More to come...

Guess Who’s Coming to Pico?

Ok, folks, here’s the scoop.  We all love our Bloom Café, but who wouldn’t want another great restaurant for the area?  Well, word has it (and I can’t reveal my sources), that Arnaud Palatan, Bloom’s owner, is taking over the old Little Owl Café (5545 W Pico Blvd, LA, CA 90019) space. The Little Owl did have a beer and wine license that is still valid until January 2009 and hopefully Palatan can transfer this and extend it.  The only other information we have is that the menu will be very French-influenced (surprise surprise).  Hopefully we’ll be able to get more information to you about this exciting development.

Pico's Golden Stitch: Hand & Sewn by Daniel

Sharon Stone, Kid Rock, Sidney Poitier, Damon Dash, Cheryl Tiegs, Angela Bassett and countless others have enjoyed the fruits of home textiles designer, Daniel Zayas,’ labor and creativity. You have probably noticed and even admired the turquoise sign with recycled foam letters that is directly across the street from Bloom, but I doubt that you have knocked on the coral door to find out what HAND & SEWN BY DANIEL (“Drapes, Pillows, Roman shades, Cushions, &…more”) is all about.

In spite of Daniels' star-studded jobs, featured in Elle Décor, InStyle Home, Hollywood Life, Western Interiors & Design, CHILD, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Hotel Bel-Air Magazine, and House Beautiful, he has kept both feet on solid ground and possesses a willingness to work with good people who present him with interesting projects, regardless of budget. Daniel's practical approach to taking on new clients and solving design problems has earned him career-long partnerships with some of the biggest names in interior design, including Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, Michaela Scherrer, and Sybil J.B. van Dijs. Lawrence-Bullard has touted Daniel as “the best drapery guy in the world” and a client's note on Daniel's thank-you collage reads, “You made our house a home.” What else could be more gratifying, you ask? Perhaps his own line. More to come...

Dr. Masseuse

Bloom Cafe's front counter, on the take-out side, is an excellent source for neighborhood happenings. That's actually how I found Pico-based certified massage therapist, Angel Castillo. She made a housecall recently, bringing along the tools of her trade: a very comfortable massage table covered in fleece and outfitted with a heating pad, a bolster and headrest that made me feel weightless, and her own blend of aromatherapy oils, creams and sprays, and her specialty which is a blend of "Swedish, deep tissue, holistic, craniosacral and shiatsu techniques." Buttah.

Angel also makes office visits and does events big and small with her massage table and/ or chair. Rates: hourly outcall - $70/ hour; $50/ hour introductory rate for new clients (first session only). To schedule call: 805-405-4150.

Savior Sundays

In the City of Angels, it seems as if yoga and Scientology have replaced good ol' Christianity (hyperbole), but this Sunday morning I was reminded by a neighbor that Jesus is still the homeboy of many. He handed me a flyer for Ambassadors for Christ Ministries - Small Group Prayer. Handing a flyer to a person who is taking out the recyclables isn't the best timing, but his faith/ good vibes/ sunny disposition was what brought me to post.

Now, I subscribe to "none of the above," except for the occasional yoga class, but I can appreciate the foundation---making yourself and the world around you...better. The flyer reads:

-Come hear positive words of hope for your life. [Positive. Good.]
-Receive prayer for any situation [ANY situation? My mind wanders...]
-Fresh coffee & refreshments [Nice.]
